What is a flue gather?

The flue gather sits above an open fire and encourages the smoke and fumes into the flue rather than into the room. Across the top of the fire opening it is always preferable to have a bevelled lintel and above that a carefully formed and tall flue gather. A well made flue gather can make the difference between a fire that spills smoke and one that works trouble free.
