Grade 1 Palladian Country House

Working inside the wallsThe substantial property was being renovated and some of the ground floor layout changed. A new chimney breast was to be positioned against an outside wall to accommodate a 1m2 fire opening for an open fire.  The designer did not want to see a chimney breast internally at first floor level.  The solution on offer was to excavate part of the outside wall sufficiently to accommodate a pair of oval pumice liners. This would not offer enough flue area for the desired fire opening and so the design team had a choice, chimney breast or smaller fire opening.

Reinstated chimneyBeing based in rural southern England offers many opportunities to work in large country houses undergoing renovation. These are often conservation sensitive and our tradesmen are familiar with traditional crafts and methods of working. We also work comfortably in conjunction with other specialist trades to offer up a solution to any troublesome projects

Today’s requirement is often similar to that of the past but the safety requirements have changed and the experience of Billing Chimneys will allow your client to have traditional fires designed to modern safety and efficiency standards.

At Billing Chimneys, in addition to the specialist expertise in all things chimney related, there is a broad understanding of the whole building process and therefore suggestions for flue route, for example, are informed by the broader requirements of the building as a whole.
